I’m taking a little break from the Marks on Fabric Series this week. I had hoped to get two more tutorials out to you this week and next but the school holidays are making it really difficult for me to work on my own projects with the kids at home. So, I thought a little round-up of some things to keep your kids busy through the break might be timely instead. Don’t worry, there’s more fabric fun coming.
With Mother’s Day is coming up in a little under a month now might be a good time to get them busy with some sweet gifts for them to give their mum or grandmother. Of course, if you, the supervising adult, are their mum, you might have to work out a way to turn your attention elsewhere! Some of these gifts might also be appropriate donations to your school’s Mother’s Day stall. Get the kids to make extras and you have teacher gifts for the end of the school year too!
Keyring

A simple sewing project that kids can manage are these sweet keyrings by Craftiness Is Not Optional. And who doesn’t need another keyring?
Heatpack

This tutorial by DIY Natural is another really simple sewing project and I know a mother or two who could use another heat pack!
Bookmark

Mums always need bookmarks – because they are always interrupted when they are reading! These scrap busting bookmarks by The Crafty Mummy are so easy to make!
Clock

This DIY Clock tutorial from Fabric Paper Glue is super easy. This project uses wrapping paper but I could see this being done with kids’ art too.
Photo Cube

Make memories for mum’s desk with this photo block project by Alpha Mom. Inkjet printed photos will smudge but laser prints won’t. This would also be another lovely way to preserve children’s art.
Coasters

These coasters are decorated with Sharpie permanent markers. See the tutorial by Paging Fun Mums! Easy for kids to make and they look super. Choose colours to suit mum’s colour scheme or favourite colours.
A Bunch of Button Flowers

These button flowers by Jones Design Company are so lovely when presented in a bunch – and they last longer than the real thing!
Jewellery Dish

This polymer clay project by The Crafting Chicks makes a cute dish for jewellery – but there are lots of things the kids could make with polymer clay. Such as…
Brooches

Here is an easy roll and cut brooch tutorial by The Pulp Zine. And…
Necklaces

These necklaces by Lisa Tilse on TutsPlus are so on-trend! I would use a quality leather thread rather than twine when making them as a gift though.
So there you have it. Ten projects for the kids to make for mum. I know I’d love any of these if they were brought in on my breakfast tray on 8th May. Let me know if any of them turn up on yours!
